Golf Handicap Index
The USGA (United States Golf Association), RCGA and others have invested heavily over many years to develop a standard format (golf Handicap Index) by which golfers of varying abilities can compete in golf tournament play. Although these organizations do not issue Handicap Indexes directly, they develop the rules for handicaps issued by golf clubs and authorized amateur golf associations since 1912. The most recent change to the USGA Handicap System formula was modification to the method for combining nine-hole scores. Other changes have been made to the handicap process.
For further information related to this and other changes effective January 2002, visit http://www.usga.org/handicap/index.html.

For information on software that will perform the calculations for personal use and and track / analyze your scores and game performance, visit click here.

All Handicap Indexes are issued by golf clubs which follow all of the procedures established in the local Handicap System. Golfers must get handicaps through clubs in order to assure fairness through "peer review" that assures reliability of the Handicap System. Handicap Indexes issued otherwise are a point of interest but not valid for tournament play.  Visit usga.org here - for further information.

The calculation of a golf handicap index is a teadious and relatively complicated procedure that is best managed by handicap software. Visit
usga.org here - Handicap System Manual for further details on the USGA handicap system and the calculations used (section 10).
